BUCK FROM THE BARN

If there is one thing we've learned from hunting in North Dakota over the years, it's that sometimes you have to get creative. This was a prime example of that. We began running a trail camera in an area that didn't have trees as far as the eye could see. Although there were no trees, there was a ton of bedding cover in the form of cattail marshes. It didn't take long to pick up a couple of shooters on the camera. We slipped into the spot to take a closer look at how we could set up to hunt this area. There were a few abandoned buildings amongst the marsh so we decided to put a ground blind inside one of them with the door cracked open just enough to film and shoot out of. The bucks were becoming more and more regular on the camera as we waited for what we thought to be the perfect wind to slip in and try to shoot one. On September 7th, the wind switched and it was game on. With plenty of shooting light left, the deer began moving and "Spork" started making his way towards the blind. With several younger bucks nearby, the mature buck stomped into range with an attitude before I sent a well placed arrow. Couldn't have drawn up a better hunt to wrap up our first trip to North Dakota for the season.
